‘No-brainer’ for Napoli to sign ‘big-name’ defender from Borussia Dortmund

It is no secret that Napoli are not yet ready to give the deal to Real Madrid defender Kalidou Koulibaly, with the Nerazzurri looking to add “big-time” talent to the squad this summer.

However, the Nerazurri have a number of options, including Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Mario Gotze and Bayer Leverkusen’s Philipp Lahm, according to reports in Italy.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been a revelation for Napolo since joining them in 2016, scoring 11 goals in all competitions for the club and assisting another five.

The German international has played in three of the team’s four Bundesliga games this season, while he has also played in five UEFA Europa League matches and scored two goals in three Champions League appearances.

With a transfer fee of €20m, Napoli will be looking for another player to fill their first-team squad, with Gotze being their most likely choice, but Koulivy is a popular option.

“He is a top player,” a source close to the club told Sky Sport Italia.

“He’s a player who has an important role to play in this team and Napoli need someone to fill that role for the future.”

The Nerazzuri have also been linked with a move for Lyon’s Mathieu Valbuena, who has been linked to a return to Paris Saint-Germain since the summer of 2018.

The 26-year, 33-cap defender is expected to leave Lyon this summer, after a two-year spell with the Ligue 1 champions, and is expected by some to leave the club as well.
